Teaching the Importance of Mental Health to Children

Children aren’t aware of what mental health is, as they don’t have a care in the world. When you grow up, you wonder where the time went – you wish you could go back to being a kid again, if only for a week or two. Kids are innocent for the most part, and they have nothing to do with mental health; that is, until they start to grow into their own. Growing up is tough enough as it is, but when you throw mental health issues into the mix, it’s going to be a problem that they’ve never experienced before. Getting them prepared for the inevitable is not only a fantastic idea, but it’s one that people should be praising. You can keep your kids prepared for the mental health issues that they could face later on in life, but you have to approach things with a gentle touch. You can’t just tell your kids that they may suffer from depression as some point in time, and that they’ll need to battle through it.

Instead, try to relate with them. We all go through mental health problems at some point in our lives, and that’s one thing that many don’t like to mention. It’s almost as if mental health issues are an unpsoken issues in society, as it has been ever since humans could communicate with one another. Children don’t need to know the intricacies of mental health, but they do need to understand that they can be sad without repercussions. It’s okay to feel upset and it’s okay to go through rough patches, as long as they’re willing to talk things out with their family and friends.

Does it Really Matter?

Kids are going to be kids, but some grow at a different pace than others. We know that girls are going to mature quicker than boys, and it might be important to talk to your daughters about mental health way before you’ll have to talk to your sons; but that’s another thing to consider. Many people feel like boys and young men are tough and can handle most thins themselves, which rings somewhat true. Men are supposed to be the ones who bring in the money for their family, as well as sacrifice themselves when times get tough. The thing is, nobody takes the time to talk to them about their mental health. Men suffer from depression at an extensive rate, and it’s probably because they are expected to shoulder the burden by themselves. It sucks, but it’s just the way that we’ve worked for such a long period of time. We’ve become used to it, and that’s something that you may want to talk about with your children. At any rate, mental health is important for an abundance of reasons; all of which wil apply to your life.
